The University of Richmond’s tornado warning siren malfunctioned Monday, prompting a campus-wide e-mail and phone alert.
The tornado warning system is tested on the first Monday of every month at 1:25 p.m. During Monday’s test the system would not shut off from the control center at the police station, university police captain Beth Simonds said.
“We are not sure why it malfunctioned,” Simonds said. “We contacted the university engineer and he is looking into it.”
Simonds said that the system has a back-up control at university facilities and that it would still be able to function in an emergency from there.
The tornado warning system was installed in 2006. In 2004 a tornado struck campus during Tropical Storm Gaston. The tornado knocked down trees and damaged several buildings.
