Campus e-mail service has been restored after a nearly seven-hour outage left those without outside e-mail clients and mobile devices unable to communicate electronically.

The system’s failure was first reported around 1 p.m. Tuesday, said Robert Barnes, a technician at the University of Richmond Help Desk. Intermittent and spotty service was restored around 7 p.m. and it appeared most of the system had righted itself by 8 p.m.

Scott Tilghman, user services manager, said about one-eighth of students were affected by the outage. The school has switched to a new e-mail server, he said, whose storage unit occasionally needed monitoring. Problems could range from the storage unit being full, to getting “caught in a loop” he said.

But Information Services staffers had repaired the issue quickly, and Tilghman said the problem was nothing big or dramatic.
