Pull on your elastic pants and grab your protractors UR students – tomorrow is National Pi Day. The beloved mathematical constant has its own day each year on March 14, or 3-14, which represents pi's first three digits. Pi (and its equally loved cousin, pie) will be celebrated on and off campus tomorrow in a variety of ways.
Math majors and nerds alike don’t have to travel far to celebrate the holiday. The Department of Math and Computer Science will celebrate with a special event titled “What is A Research Mathematician?” Dr. Jonathan Jedwab from Simon Fraser University will present on the combination of philosophy, nitpicking, science, dreaming and everything else it takes to research math. The event will take place in Jepson 109 at 4 p.m. There will also be light refreshments and snacks in the lounge outside of Jepson 212 at 3:30 p.m.
If you celebrate Pi Day solely for the deals on sweet treats, be sure to stop by Proper Pie Co. on East Broad tomorrow. For the first time in shop history, the bakery will be open on Monday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be giving away special Pi-Day coffee mugs with the first 100 pie purchases.
Not into math or pie, but still want to do something fun on a national holiday? Stop by All Fired Up, a paint-your-own-ceramics studio, at either the Short Pump or Midlothian location. When you mention Pi Day at checkout you will receive $3.14 off a purchase of $15 or more. Bonus points for painting something circular.
