Despite its 2021 ballot defeat, the prospect of having a casino in Richmond is far from over. On Monday, Sept. 18, businessmen and community members gathered at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center to discuss the proposed Richmond Grand Casino and Resort, which will be on the ballot as a referendum question this November.

The city of Richmond hosted a pep rally for the University of Richmond Spiders and Virginia Commonwealth University Rams men's basketball teams, which have both qualified for the "Sweet 16" round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament. UR president Edward Ayers, VCU president Michael Rao and Mayor Dwight Jones each spoke at the ceremony, which took place in the Turning Basin downtown.

Last summer, when I greeted the 2- to 5-year-olds who came to the camp where I have worked each summer for the last eight years, I noticed that a number of them were wearing Baltimore Orioles paraphernalia. I am from Baltimore, so this shouldn't be that surprising, except that children in Baltimore start playing lacrosse around the age of 4. Most of these children will never play baseball because their parents will use lacrosse as a way to send them to good colleges on partial or full scholarships.
