As tourism in Cuba increases, and as University of Richmond students now have the opportunity to study abroad there, many first-time visitors don't know what to expect. Some of the items listed below, written by a Cuban for non-Cubans, might be common knowledge, but others are not.

Ten faculty members from a variety of disciplines attended a faculty seminar in Cuba this June and returned with new ideas and changed perspectives, they said Wednesday in a debrief and forum session.

When Humberto Cardounel Sr. fled Cuba in 1961 after Fidel Castro took power, he left most things behind, including his law career, for a new start in the U.S. As he rebuilt his life in Virginia, he began a family with his wife, Lourdes, who was another Cuban immigrant, and he taught Spanish at Richmond.

Havana 59 takes classic Cuban, Caribbean and Spanish flavors, full of cilantro, coconut and lots of garlic, to the max and applies the ingredients in innovative ways. The decor is rustic and felt like a Cuban nightclub in the '50s during dinner. There were lightbulbs strung around and the walls seemed to be on the verge of crumbling down.
