With UR’s move to remote learning, many seniors were left without extensive resources, which makes a job or internship search appear daunting at first glance. Searching for a job during senior year of college can be so stressful that many students at the University of Richmond begin to worry about it long before their senior fall.

The liberal arts major is endlessly reminded of the cardinal sin of his field by parents, friends, and employers: is there a market for this degree? Willing to explore, some humanities students are breaking free of their major, and seeking employment in their extra-curricular fields.

We are halfway through the semester, and it has dawned on me that the frustration I have had during the past several weeks has not been school-related, but rather related to job opportunities on campus. It seems that, although there is an up-to-date list of job openings on the financial aid website, it is challenging to receive a reply from any of the prospective positions.

I have this vision of myself this time next year. I am bumming around in the darkness of my parents' basement wallowing in my inability to latch onto some noble, writerly pursuit.

There's something about a job interview that is a lot like a first date. Correct name pronunciations are still being disentangled by the tongue. Hometown and hobbies are still being explored with half-artificial curiosity. The questioned person is struggling to focus more on what he or she is saying rather than on whether to look his or her interrogator directly or from a more attractive angle.

My mom recently went to see the new documentary film, "Race to Nowhere." She has been running around recommending it to everyone, in part because she is a teacher at a middle school, but mostly because, in her own words: "I watched it and just kept thinking to myself, 'This is about my children. I can't believe it.'"

It might be because I've been listening to Taylor Swift's new album on repeat since it came out, or perhaps it's the fact that I shopped online for wedding dresses yesterday during chapter with my roommate, or maybe it's because the last thing my apartmentmate and I did before bed last night was snuggle into the covers with my laptop on the hunt for the perfect engagement ring, but marriage is definitely in the air this week (and by week I mean the last three years of my life).

My most recent article described me defending my male friend in what was realistically (if not understatedly) a physical assault on campus. Despite the truly horrific nature of the event, it brought something very interesting to my attention.

With Parents Weekend quickly approaching I've got two things on my mind. One of which may or may not include hiring Merry Maids to come and salvage what's left of my apartment. "Mom, I swear it came this dirty!"
