While a blizzard struck Richmond Monday night and into Tuesday morning, the University of Richmond Police Department dealt with two, separate single-car crashes, one ending with a red SUV flipped on its side in Westhampton Lake and the other resulting in a reckless driving charge, said Beth Simonds, assistant chief of police.

With Thursday classes canceled and a projected up to 6 inches of snow, there are more than enough reasons for UR students to celebrate. The one dilemma left on everyone's minds: How to spend your day off and enjoy the largest snowfall of the year so far. Luckily, I'm here with some suggestions. Granted, this may not be the most realistic list of Valensnocalypse (Valentine's Day week plus snowpocalypse) activities, but it's certainly the most fun.

Ordinarily, I am supposed to focus on national, large-scale issues in my articles for The Collegian. According to my estimations, the University of Richmond was the landing pad for more than 18 inches of snow during the past week and a half. Which of course covered at least five or six miles of roads, paths and sidewalks, much of which quickly turned icy as the temperatures dropped.

On Monday I spent approximately an hour and 15 minutes trudging through the snow, to and from class, the Pier, the library, the dining hall, the gym, North Court and X-lot. For me, this is a typical day. For you, I'm guessing it's not far off.

Many students at the University of Richmond enjoyed Saturday's snowfall from the comfort of their on-campus dorms and apartments. Some went sledding on the hill in front of Boatwright Memorial Library, some trekked to the Heilman Dining Center in their water-resistant rain boots and others remained content to wander the grounds and take in the snow-covered sights.

I'm sure there are countless articles and editorials in this week's edition of The Collegian recapping the wonderful snow day we all saw on Monday. While you all may be tired of reading about it, I couldn't let this opportunity pass without expressing a word of gratitude to the university administration and staff who made our snow day a success.
