With quarantine boredom at its peak, it seems as though everyone who has access to bleach and sweatpants is suddenly becoming a do-it-yourself master. Yes, I'm sure you've seen the DIY TikToks.

In a time when social distancing has become the new normal, I have observed that students are relying on social media to help stay in touch with friends.

At only 20 years old, I find it amusing that I can already say that I remember how different life was when I was younger. I got my first cell phone in ninth grade, and I still remember the days when my family all had a RAZR.

Three days ago I found out I was a victim of stolen

Twitter. Facebook. Instagram. Tumblr. Pinterest. These are just a few examples of the social media platforms that exist today.

This past summer, I volunteered to drive a group of middle-schoolers to a trampoline gym on a church-sponsored outing. Before departing with five seventh-grade girls and one eighth-grade boy, I recalled my own prepubescent crew of comrades. I remembered our incessant shenanigans and relentless jockeying for female attention, and began to question my original motivation to volunteer.

Hundreds of dollars in gift cards are up for grabs in the Office of Emergency Management's social media challenge against Virginia Commonwealth University this month. The contest will run until Friday, Sept. 26, and is open to University of Richmond students, faculty and staff.

University of Richmond was not immune to the national trend of college students setting up "confessions" Facebook pages for their schools, which has become popular in the past few years. But the Richmond Confessions page has had such an impact on the university community that leaders of three student organizations thought it would be beneficial to host a roundtable discussion focusing on it.

As technology has evolved, so have our communication strategies. University of Richmond has 75 study abroad programs around the world, making international communication a priority for many students. IPhone applications such as WhatsApp and Viber have made home only a few clicks away, but some students have found communication detracts from the abroad immersion experience.

Academic stress doesn't bring out the best in any of us. Some retreat to the library for 24+ hours, subsisting off 8:15 bagels and red eyes (double shot, iced, with skim). Some plan ahead, only to spend the morning leading up to the exam or deadline freaking out that they didn't study hard enough, or forgot an essential detail.

As many people know, the anti-gay marriage laws DOMA (Defense of Marriage) and Proposition 8 have been up for review in the Supreme Court these past few days. Probably most of us wouldn't know about this if it weren't for the profile picture-changing phenomenon that has swept the country along with it (at least I'm assuming that it has swept the country- my Facebook friends are pretty localized on this coast).

On Tuesday, March 26, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) asked people to change their Facebook profile pictures to a pink-on-red equal sign avatar to show support for marriage equality as the Supreme Court met to decide the future of same-sex marriage in the United States.

On the morning of Saturday, Sept. 22, the Gottwald atrium was scattered with laptops and cell phones. Less than 24 hours had passed since men's track and field team members heard that their team would be cut next year, but they were already bent over their supplies, talking strategy.
