For some University of Richmond students, studying abroad is a transformative experience during their college career. However, the financial aspects can sometimes discourage students from taking this opportunity, since cultural immersion and travel often yield payment. A reader asked The Collegian to answer the question: “Why is study abroad full tuition, even though the tuition of some institutions abroad differs from UR's?”

Virtual events have been becoming more popular with the increase of COVID-19 distancing protocols and restricted travel. Although these events are not the same as actually being abroad, this round-up of virtual tours and videos of international sites will give students as close a feeling as is possible during the pandemic.

Sophomore Ryan Gardner was sitting at his computer updating his newly created music blog in early Dec. 2010 when he stumbled upon a song by a relatively unknown band that piqued his interest, he said. The band, Timeflies, had about 150 "likes" on Facebook at the time, but the song, "Lose My Mind," was quickly gaining recognition across college music blogs.

Study abroad is not a vacation. You're not going to be staying in a luxurious hotel, you're not going to be eating at five-star restaurants and you're not going home in a few days. You're living in a different country, immersing in a different culture and (for me at least) speaking a different language. Plus, you're American, which in many countries makes you even more conspicuous. It is not easy.

Last week, university community members cheered for the Spider basketball players and wished them luck as they loaded the bus and headed to the airport for Texas. The players put on their headphones, boarded their flight and were off to face Kansas the next night, leaving the Robins Center in their rear view. A select few Spider fans left their classes and University Forest Apartments behind and followed the team all the way to San Antonio.

At 10:26 p.m. on Monday, March 21, Steve Bisese offered all undergraduates the opportunity to take a university-subsidized bus to San Antonio for the Sweet 16 basketball game. More than 3,000 students received the email, and only 11 responded.

Bed bugs are spreading at an alarming rate across the United States. According to a story by Laura Petrecca in USA Today, pest control companies have seen a 57 percent increase in cases related to bed bugs in the last five years and an 81 percent increase since 2000.
