Despite its 2021 ballot defeat, the prospect of having a casino in Richmond is far from over. On Monday, Sept. 18, businessmen and community members gathered at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center to discuss the proposed Richmond Grand Casino and Resort, which will be on the ballot as a referendum question this November.

Nineteen months ago, the University of Richmond removed six building names after years of pressure, with the two most controversial, named after a slaveholder and a eugenicist, driving the process. Now, as students continue to live and learn in these buildings, UR said the building names, such as Residence Hall No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 will remain.

As she carried her belongings into Lora Robins Court on move-in day last fall, Jasmine Khatcheressian was plagued by anxiety that would last for months. Not only was she nervous to begin a new phase of her life as a first-year college student, but Khatcheressian, a transgender woman, had been assigned to live with a cisgender male roommate in a male housing block.
