My most recent article described me defending my male friend in what was realistically (if not understatedly) a physical assault on campus. Despite the truly horrific nature of the event, it brought something very interesting to my attention.
The University of Richmond's North Court reception room was filled with laughter last Tuesday as the women's lacrosse team practiced self-defense moves; but what they were preparing for was not funny.
Larceny
Every student enrolled here at the University of Richmond is well-educated. But, it has come to my attention that academic proficiency is simply not sufficient at the college level, and that there is currently a significant problem with ignorance on the Richmond campus.
During the past two months, there has been more crime on campus than most of us could have ever expected. The vandalism, break-ins and assaults have caused many to wonder whether the University of Richmond is really as safe as it proudly claims to be.
Top University of Richmond officials met for a 2.5-hour walk around the campus during the night of Oct. 20 to investigate areas in need of safety improvements.
On Oct. 13, a new regulation permitted Richmond College men to use the on-campus Safety Shuttle.
Rape
Two University of Richmond students were assaulted during the early morning hours of Oct. 3, making a total of 10 on-campus assaults reported in one month.

Our campus is absolutely phenomenal in every possible way. The grass is always neatly cut and maintained, flowers droop off of trees and bushes to the end of every perfectly constructed winding path and students are always exquisitely outfitted and flawlessly put-together. Maybe the wizard was nothing more than a fairy tale, but it certainly seems that Oz has been brought to real life.
Eight cases of simple and aggravated assault were reported to the University of Richmond police between Sept. 3 and Sept. 19.
A Westhampton College student filed a sexual assault report with the University of Richmond police on Sept. 21.
Drug/Narcotic Violation
Imagine that a certain someone (me) walks up to the doors of Gottwald on a weekend. This person (me), being a bio major, expects to be able to get into an academic building after hours. He grabs the door handle, and — thud! — discovers he's locked out.
A slew of on-campus crimes at the University of Richmond were reported last weekend, ranging from assault to breaking and entering.
Theft from Motor Vehicle
A few years ago, a friend of mine, who I'll call Steph for the sake of privacy, was fast asleep in her University of Richmond Forest Apartment. Steph and her boyfriend had fallen asleep while watching a movie together on her futon downstairs. It hadn't been long before Steph had fallen asleep when all of a sudden she began to feel a little ... tickle.
