Westhampton College hosted the Connecting Women of Color Conference on Feb. 13, a convention that promoted inclusivity, diversity and support for women of color.
One hundred years ago, Westhampton Lake was much more than a Facebook cover photo. It served as both a physical and metaphorical divide between Richmond men and Westhampton women. Although classes have since integrated and students can live on either side of the lake, the roots of gender separation still remain in what is known as the coordinate college system. Two deaneries, two student governments and two mission statements coexist under one university, though debate over the validity of the system divides the campus community.
As alumnae, we have both served on Westhampton College Government Association, and last year we were the WCGA president and chair of senate. We are disheartened and saddened by some of the responses to Ring Dance 2015.

We all learned this rule in kindergarten: Don’t put your hands on other people without their permission. It seems that our administrators forgot this lesson Saturday night at Ring Dance when the deans and policemen crossed the line from strongly encouraging against to physically restraining escorts from walking down The Jefferson Hotel’s historic flight of stairs with junior women.
In Tuesday’s State of the Union, President Barack Obama showed a serious desire to implement his plan of two years of tuition-free community college for young people who are, as he put it, “willing to work for it.” His initiative has been stirring some controversy in Washington, D.C., and beyond ever since he first made his ideas public.
Evan Kelly led Richmond’s defense as it pushed around Elon’s offense in another blowout win for the Spiders on Saturday.
Damaged water fountains, wrecked bulletin boards, torn down exit signs and missing furniture have become typical in South Court throughout the past month. The vandalism began in late September, and all started with broken glass on the floor by the exits from the framed emergency procedures signs.
The youngest and oldest of Westhampton College students gathered Saturday in Cannon Memorial Chapel to celebrate the duties and privileges of being Westhampton women. They were joined by hundreds of alumnae to honor the centennial of the founding of Westhampton College.

Every morning when Sherman Logan wakes and struggles to get out of bed he reflects on his football career. He knows his joint pain may improve throughout the day, but he knows his senses will not. His hearing is muffled and his sense of smell is virtually nonexistent.
Matt Logan, a sophomore in Sigma Phi Epsilon, won the title of Mr. Richmond 2014 after walking the runway in his fraternity shirt, playing the guitar, singing a mash up of three music hits and sharing his life motto.
The College Board recently announced, effective spring 2016, the SAT will be completely redesigned. The website outlines the basic changes that include a return to the 1600-point scale, no penalties for wrong answers and three newly organized sections: evidence-based reading and writing, math and the essay. The College Board explains the motivation for these changes, claiming that the new test is better aligned with "college readiness and success." Despite these claims, the SAT will still fail to capture many aspects of intelligence that can influence success in college.
The Richmond College Dean's Office introduced the "I am Richmond College" project this February. The initiative is designed to celebrate diversity, both visible and invisible, within the RC community.
March 5, the College Board revealed new changes to the SAT that will make the test more in sync with high school curriculum and more focused on important academic skills.
Westhampton College women will have the chance to be part of the university's first body acceptance class starting this spring to fight body dissatisfaction and the pressures surrounding young women to pursue an unattainable, unhealthy body.
The University of Richmond Alumni Association and the Westhampton College Dean's Office co-hosted the annual Westhampton College Senior Celebration Night at the Jepson Alumni Center this Tuesday.
In the past several years, the rate of college students studying abroad has increased dramatically. Not only do schools encourage spending a semester in a foreign country more these days, but students also seem to be encouraging each other. According to the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers, 283,332 students studied abroad during the 2011-12 school year. Since then, the number has risen.
It is an incredibly exciting time at the University of Richmond. I hold this sentiment to the same extent today as when I decided to apply here as an early decision applicant and as when I first arrived here as a freshman in August of 2011.
