First-year students and transfer students gathered for a welcome ceremony at the Robins Center, followed by a picnic at President Edward L. Ayers' home Sunday. After the picnic, some students enjoyed dessert at the Modlin Center.

During Sunday's commencement ceremonies, the University of Richmond awarded 702 bachelor's degrees and 74 graduate degrees. Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine, who is also chairman of the Democratic National Committee, delivered the commencement address, and senior chemistry major Odamea Akomah gave remarks at the student commencement speaker.

Nine students -- three from the University of Richmond, five from Virginia Commonwealth University and one from Randolph-Macon College -- were commissioned as 2nd lieutenants in the U.S. Army on Saturday during a ceremony at Cannon Memorial Chapel. They are: Riannon Blaisdell-Black, Andrew Deel and Sean Sneeden of Richmond; Paul Dufore, Jeremy Stoddard, Mallory Vance, Joshua Williams and Earl Yevak of VCU; and Jeremy Robinson of Randolph-Macon College.

Vitality, movement, freedom, naturalness, and individual spirit combine to create a presence called chi-yun. The 1500-year-old concept of chi-yun is controversial because of its subjective nature, but the 20 paintings now displayed in the "Chi-Yun, Breath Resonance in Contemporary Art" exhibit in the Lora Robins Gallery drip with it.

The men's basketball team defeated St. John's University 75-69 in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational on Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Last year, the Spiders also played in the CBI, losing to the University of Virginia in the first round.

Several University of Richmond football players participated in field drills and worked out before of NFL scouts and position coaches Thursday at First Market Stadium. Running back Josh Vaughan, fullback John Crone, defensive ends Lawrence Sidbury and Sherman Logan, and tight ends Joe Stewart and Joe Monteverde took part in the event.
