The article last week suggesting that Victoria Cobb should be denied her leadership award immediately struck me as wrong on numerous levels. Most obviously, the authors express dripping intolerance for someone they view as intolerant. In case you missed the irony, they, who champion tolerance, refuse to tolerate someone. It's easy to tolerate different views that are tame, or don't affect you, but if you truly value tolerance, the test occurs when a view comes along which really hits you hard.

Along with other members of the University of Richmond community, I am greatly disappointed to hear the news that coach Mike London will be leaving Richmond for the head coach position in football at the University of Virginia. I highly respect our athletic director, Jim Miller, in his ability to recruit a coach with such a good fit for our university. As a further credit to Jim Miller, London came to Richmond from a non-head coach position. This is less disruptive to other athletic programs than to pluck a high-achieving head coach from a smaller program. The cascading effect of coaches moving from one program to another seems to be a trap Richmond is caught in too often.

When the story first broke that former University of Richmond football coach Mike London would be leaving his alma mater for the University of Virginia, I couldn't help but feel disappointed that a man we proudly claimed as our own would jump ship so quickly. This disappointment, however, was not merely a feeling of betrayal or anger at another FBS/BCS school poaching talent from our proud university. Rather, there was a hint of fatalism surrounding the entire affair, a knowledge that as much as I love this university and as much as men like London have professed to love it as well, Richmond is still seen as a mere stepping stone for those with aspirations for greater fame and fortune.
