Spider Sports Recap: Week of Oct. 27

Field Hockey 

Nov. 1: Win 4-0 at Davidson College

Four University of Richmond players scored and the defense thwarted the only shot by Davidson, securing a 4-0 win for the UR field hockey team. The Spiders started strong with sophomore Steffie Bongers scoring a goal in the first 55 seconds of the game. About four minutes into the second period, sophomore Addie Nash followed with the second goal of the game. Senior Elise Zwicklbauer made her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the third quarter. The Spiders’ final goal came from first-year Lindsey Frank. Junior goalkeeper Frankie-Lynne Conklin did not have to make any saves in the team's first shutout win of the season. The Spiders earned a spot in the 2019 Atlantic 10 tournament, which will be hosted at Crenshaw Field beginning Friday, Nov. 8. The UR team finished regular season conference play in a three-way tie with Lock Haven University and the University of Massachusetts for second place in the A-10. All of the teams have a 6-2 record.

Nov. 3: Loss 0-4 at Wake Forest University

The Spiders lost 0-4 to No. 20 Wake Forest in the team's regular-season finale on Sunday afternoon. Although the Spiders left defeated, the team matched the Demon Deacons in shots and penalty corners. The Spiders took three shots off of two penalty corners in the first quarter, outshooting the host team. Bongers took her third shot of the game off UR's fourth penalty corner opportunity, but the Demon Deacons’ goalkeeper saved it, keeping the score 1-0 at halftime. The Wake Forest team profited from two opportunities early in the third quarter, taking a 3-0 lead. Then, with a little over five minutes left in the game , the Demon Deacons scored, making it a 4-0 game. 

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Nov. 1-2: Thomas Murphy Invitational, Loyola University 

UR Swim and Dive was on the road for the first time in the 2019-20 season. After the first of three sessions at the Thomas Murphy Invitational, hosted by Loyola, the Spiders were in fourth in the five-team meet. Johns Hopkins University led with 273.5 points, followed by West Chester University at 218, Drexel University at 180, UR at 178 and Loyola at 151.5 points.

On the second day of the invitational, the Spiders kept their spot in fourth place, finishing the competition with 697 points. Senior Hannah Gouger placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.33 seconds, and sophomore Maggie Purcell had a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:19.5. 

Cross Country 

Nov. 2: A-10 Championships, Leesburg, Virginia

UR's cross country teams competed in the A-10 Championship meet at the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg on Saturday. The men’s team finished seventh, led by senior Miles Clikeman, who turned in a sixth-place individual finish. Clikeman received all-conference honors for the run. The women came in fourth, with first-year Kate Dickow turning in the Spiders’ top finish at 16th. The La Salle University Explorers were the conference champions for both the men's and women's races.

Football 

Nov. 2: Win 30-10 vs. Stony Brook University

The Spiders defeated No. 20 Stony Brook for their third consecutive win against ranked Colonial Athletic Association opponents on Saturday afternoon. UR remains in second place in the CAA with a 4-1 conference record. Junior linebacker Tyler Dressler led the way with one sack out of seven tackles total, and first-year linebacker Tristan Wheeler also had seven tackles. Cornerback Brandon Feamster, a graduate transfer from Duke University, recovered a fumble and had a crucial interception in the fourth quarter, denying a Stony Brook comeback. Redshirt junior quarterback Joe Mancuso recorded two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. Mancuso completed 23 of his 30 passing attempts for 318 yards passing, which included two touchdowns to Keyston Fuller, another graduate transfer from Duke. Mancuso also rushed for 88 yards on 16 carries and ran for two touchdowns. Wide receiver Charlie Fessler, graduate transfer from Northwestern University, led the team in receptions, recording a career-high 11 catches for 147 receiving yards. Fessler had eight receptions in the first half. Redshirt first-year running back Aaron Dykes added 44 rushing yards and a career-high 72 receiving yards. UR will be traveling to Villanova University this weekend for the Spiders’ fourth consecutive CAA game against a nationally ranked opponent.

Men’s Tennis

Nov. 1-3: William & Mary Fall Invitational, Williamsburg, Virginia

 The Spiders left with a win in both singles and doubles after the three-day William & Mary Fall Invitational. First-year Nick Mueller won against the University of Pennsylvania’s Jonah Jurick, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Mueller lost his other match, finishing 1-1 in singles. In doubles, sophomores John Walsh and Alex Wernink had a close win against College of William & Mary opponents sophomore JosephBrailovsky and junior Finbar Talcott, 9-8. They lost their second match in a tiebreaker against Aditya Gupta and Harsh Parikh from Penn, 8-7 (6). The Spiders will finish the fall season in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in a tournament hosted by Wake Forest University from Nov. 8-10.

Men’s Basketball

Nov. 3: Win 70-57 vs. Randolph-Macon College

The Richmond Spiders defeated the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets 70-57 in an exhibition Sunday evening. With a strong defensive effort, the Spiders held Randolph-Macon to 34% shooting from the field and 24% from beyond the arc. On the offensive side, redshirt junior forward Grant Golden, led the team, scoring 17 points on 7-10 shooting from the field and adding six assists, a team high. Blake Francis, a redshirt junior guard who transferred from Wagner College 18 months ago, scored 15 points and had a team-high four steals. Redshirt junior guard Nick Sherod, back on the court for the first time since he suffered a torn left ACL last November, came back strong with 11 points and shot 3-4 from 3-point range. Jacob Gilyard, junior guard and preseason All A-10 selection, contributed 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Spiders will open the regular season at home Friday at 7 p.m. against St. Francis University (Pennsylvania).
