First off, I want to thank those who have courageously shared their stories this past month and continue to work tirelessly toward creating a better Richmond. I am proud to attend a university where this sense of responsibility and level of activism is so clearly visible and vocal on many levels.

One hundred years ago, Westhampton Lake was much more than a Facebook cover photo. It served as both a physical and metaphorical divide between Richmond men and Westhampton women. Although classes have since integrated and students can live on either side of the lake, the roots of gender separation still remain in what is known as the coordinate college system. Two deaneries, two student governments and two mission statements coexist under one university, though debate over the validity of the system divides the campus community.
As alumnae, we have both served on Westhampton College Government Association, and last year we were the WCGA president and chair of senate. We are disheartened and saddened by some of the responses to Ring Dance 2015.

We all learned this rule in kindergarten: Don’t put your hands on other people without their permission. Whether you are a returning student, staff or faculty member, alumni who call the Richmond area home or a member of the class of 2018, The Collegian wishes you a warm welcome to the start of this new academic year. Every fresh semester is unique and exciting, but the fall of 2014 should be truly dynamic. We have a freshman class that flaunts 331 national honor society members and represents 32 different countries. We welcome our new provost, Jacquelyn S. Fetrow, as she embarks on her inaugural fall at Richmond. We celebrate the history of our university with the centennial year of Westhampton College. And for those of us who have been here for a while, we enter this fall with nostalgic warmth as this is the final fall that President Ayers will occupy his desk in Maryland Hall.

Dear members of the university community:
Throughout the past semester at University of Richmond, the campus community has grown accustomed to the noise next to South Court and the Intramural fields--the frequent buzzing of men in hard hats erecting massive brick structures. In August, the university will unveil Westhampton Hall and the Gateway Village Apartments, putting a year's worth of work and noise on full display.
The Westhampton College four-year roommate dinner is a tradition that has been going on for at least two decades, and recognizes those students who have stayed together as roommates throughout their college career, Dean Juliette Landphair said.
