I don't think that there was anything I could have done to prepare myself for University of Richmond orientation.

Three freshmen stand on one knee and yell out things they all think they will have in common. "PS2," one says. They get ready, jump up in unison and shout like the surrounding groups but no, one person likes the X-Box gaming system more.

Every student enrolled here at the University of Richmond is well-educated. But, it has come to my attention that academic proficiency is simply not sufficient at the college level, and that there is currently a significant problem with ignorance on the Richmond campus.

The office of Common Ground has been following discussions taking place in The Collegian and elsewhere about racism and the varied campus-life experiences of students. It was the day before I left for my journey to Europe. All summer, I had been mentally preparing myself. I was going to live in a small Spanish city for four months, attend a university in which no one spoke English and try to do it successfully.

I've finally been outted by an online comment (don't we just love www.thecollegianur.com?) - I'm not really from Compton. My name just "grants me access to a pun," and to be honest, I didn't actually know who N.W.A. was. But whatever, we'll just call it irony that I actually come from the Midwest. I mean, St. Louis (my real hometown) is up there in standing, as far as rap music goes (until he semi-fell off the face of the earth, who didn't love Nelly? And J-Kwon and Chingy were clearly so legit). But I digress.

It still seems weird to me that a semester has already gone by since coming to Richmond, but the beginning to my second semester is starting off even more quickly than the first. I can't say I missed having a week of Orientation before starting class, but what happened to that so-called breeze of a "syllabus week?" I've already read three and a half books since coming back, which is more than I can say for the five weeks I spent at home.
