According to messages from the mass media, drinking is one of the primary pastimes of the 18-to-25-year-old demographic, even though nearly half of this age group is younger than the legal drinking age.

Do Richmond students care about the environment as much as our president does? On Nov. 13, 2007, President Ayers signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. Since then, the president announced environmental stewardship to be a priority on campus and has followed this pronouncement with actions: D-Hall's certification as a Virginia Green Restaurant, a commitment to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certificated Silver certified construction projects, the pursuit of a program that would allow SpiderCards to be used on the GRTC public transportation system and the Eco-Spider Challenge to promote sustainability on campus. Although all of these initiatives are excellent steps for our campus to take, are we, the students, paying attention?

President Edward Ayers is preparing to lead this university at a time when it's rapidly evolving. With this in mind, we urge Ayers to first address a variety of our concerns. First, students are suffering from over-programming and tremendous stress. Visits to counseling services are at an all-time high. We're tired and overworked. A combination of driven students and a surplus of opportunities has resulted in over-involvement. That's to be expected when so many of us came here with outstanding resumes and seemed determined to accomplish the same thing — if not more — in college. If we're so committed to doing well in our classes, how can we find time to evaluate and appreciate what we've learned?
