Outside the office of Amy Treonis in the Gottwald Science Center, lettuce, broccoli, onions and other seedlings are preparing for their ultimate transfer to outdoor soil. They will soon grow in shared agricultural plots to benefit lower-income communities in southside Richmond.

A cacophony greeted visitors the second they entered the door, as raucous yells and laughter filled the air. Children were running, spinning around and air-dribbling basketballs. And then suddenly, the room quieted as the evening's activities began with a Bible passage. The children listened attentively, and then were asked to think about how the reading applied to their lives.

Douglas Hicks, professor of leadership studies and religion, has been appointed provost and dean of faculty at Colgate University. Hicks said he will use the knowledge of leadership that he has gained as a Jepson professor to help him lead Colgate.

During the summer, a core group of about eight University of Richmond Bonner Scholars came together in order to establish one cohesive English as a Second Language program where students at Richmond could help teach English to members of the community who want to assimilate into society.

The University of Richmond hosted the 2009 Bonner Congress for the first time since the conference's 1997 inception, giving 170 Bonner Scholars from colleges across the United States an opportunity to further their service projects and combat student apathy on their campuses.

Beginning this summer, all incoming first-year student-athletes will be given early registration privileges for the fall 2008 semester. In addition, all first- and second-year student-athletes will be eligible for early registration for the spring 2009, fall 2009 and spring 2010 semesters, all according to a proposal prepared by the Faculty Athletic Committee.

With the start of the new semester came a new home for the Bonner Scholars Program. After its students launched a letter-writing campaign last semester, the program moved from the Office of the Chaplaincy to the Center for Civic Engagement.
