Everyone in the world is connected by the desire to be happy. There are thousands of articles out there on how to achieve and preserve happiness, yet people are still seeking desperately that coveted secret to contentment. I talked about this in an article that I wrote last year. Unfortunately, I still don't have the answer. I have, however, compiled a list of five simple things that seem to consistently bring people joy, no matter who they are.

Your car would not run very well on unclean fuel nor would it be able to get you where you need to go if the tank is on "E." I liken this scenario to the human body. It must be replenished with proper nourishment after it has been broken down due to physical activity. So why would you want to knowingly sabotage all of your well-intentioned efforts in the gym by not fueling up afterward? Perhaps he or she is uninformed or deliberately neglecting exercise regimes. I posit that it seems relatively easier to throw some dumbbells around in the gym but it takes a more concerted effort when paying attention to the proper fuel consumption and when to execute your meals. Those who think they can diet without exercising and those who think they can eat whatever they want because they exercise, are sadly misguided.

So, have your New Year's resolutions once again found you where they met you in previous years? That is, right there stuck only in the New Year? If you are like most of us, your resolutions fall short of the term. If you find that your resolutions dissolve into something you must constantly re-visit or resolve every year, then either you are insane or, more likely, just human and maybe a bit uninspired. Goals can be fitness or health related, and they may also be lifestyle related. Goals are meant to improve you. This year, work on creating strategic and goal-oriented resolutions that stick and that are resolved by the year's end. Sure, that is much easier said than done, but here are some ways to help:

Rumbling down Route 60, crammed in the back seat of an over-crowded Jeep, the vestiges of Saturday night's debauchery still lingering, I half wished I had stuck to my usual Sunday routine of noontime D-Hall and an unproductive afternoon in the library. But as soon as we rolled onto the gravel driveway and saw Demas Boudreaux standing in front of the 19th century estate that is home to Commonwealth Birding, I knew I'd made the right decision. In front of us, we had an afternoon of quail hunting in beautiful rural Virginia.

As dozens of seniors walked to class on Thursday morning, they sported the same fluorescent wristband on their arms. Regardless of the fact that they were hungover, or tired, or just plain regretful that they spent the majority of their Dining Dollars the night before, most seniors on campus were excited about the re-opening of The Cellar.
