In June of 2008, President Emeritus of Middlebury College John McCardell launched the Amethyst Initiative at the Annapolis Group, an organization of 120 liberal arts colleges. The Amethyst Initiative, a movement to lower the drinking age to 18, has been signed by 135 college presidents across the nation.

Most think slavery is an unjust institution because it deprives slaves of the fruits of their labor and is often inherited at birth. Slavery upsets us because it prevents people from benefiting in proportion to the value they generate for others, and because they become enslaved based on their demographics rather than their actions.

Some people are natural automobile operators. In swift arcs of the ankle, these naturals slow to barely noticeable stops without promoting even the slightest hint of jolting motion. With smooth panoramic vision, these people are constantly and acutely aware of even the smallest of insignificancies — such as squirrels, stop signs or pedestrians. With one-handed ease, they turn the car without facing oncoming traffic at the turn's completion. They drive fast. They drive fearlessly. I move aside for them as though they are all emergency vehicles.

SEOUL, South Korea -- The U.S. and Korea have been in negotiations over a free trade agreement (FTA) for some time now. Up to now, Korea hasn't imported U.S. beef, and an FTA would require that to change. For one controversial reason or another, this has sparked a fear among many Koreans that importing U.S. beef means risking the importation of Mad Cow Disease. Late last year, a number of anti-FTA protests took to the streets of Seoul, and one of them became violent after dark.

Drinking alcohol is assumed to be such an integral part of college life that the question "do you drink?" refers almost exclusively to the infamous and controversial liquid. According to messages from the mass media, drinking is one of the primary pastimes of the 18-to-25-year-old demographic, even though nearly half of this age group is younger than the legal drinking age.

Peter has been the manager of Alcoholic Beverage Control store No. 254 on Three Chopt Road for 12 years. Six days a week, he has sold some of the finest liquors to local residents as well as University of Richmond students. He's sold tequila on Tuesdays, whiskey on Wednesdays and plenty of Southern Comfort on Saturdays. But not once has he sold a drop of liquor on a Sunday.
