The biannual Richmond Restaurant Week is happening from Oct. 19-25, and there are definitely some restaurants that you will want to visit.
One of the best aspects of living in Richmond is having a myriad of restaurants scattered about the city. Richmond's Restaurant Week is one of the best times to discover new eateries and explore the city -- all while raising money for charity.
The Blue Goat is a restaurant right near campus on Grove Avenue. I have always heard great things about it but hadn't had the chance to try it until now, and I'm glad I did. The restaurant has a cool atmosphere with tons of booths and bar seating. It also has private rooms in the back of the restaurants with glass walls so that you can have a bigger party without feeling isolated from the rest of the restaurant. The bar scene Thursday night was crowded with tons of middle-aged people who seemed to be part of the same community. There were tons of friendly vibes -- it seemed like a great neighborhood restaurant.
I've heard tons of good reviews about the relatively new burger place in town called Burger Bach, and finally had a chance to try it this past weekend. Burger Bach (pronounced "batch") is a "New Zealand inspired gastronomical public house," aka nice burger joint right on the edge of Carytown. When we walked into the restaurant on Sunday night, it was very full but did not feel overwhelmingly packed and had a comfortable atmosphere. The space is not very big; it has a bar with seating, one long bar-height table that spans the length of the restaurant and is community type seating (meaning you will be seated right next to other parties) and booths lining the rest of the free wall space in the restaurant. It is not your typical layout; it almost promotes a sense of community.
Family weekend is one of the best weekends of the year for all of us foodies. Parents from all parts of the country come to see their dear children they miss so much. And since they miss us so much they are willing to spend some dough. Family weekend is a great opportunity to try all of the restaurants in Richmond you have always wanted to try but cannot afford on a college budget. I made my family reservations at Pearl's Raw Bar Friday night.
Angela's is cute. No other word describes it better. I give it high marks for being close to campus (it's about 5 minutes away), but it is definitely a hole-in-the-wall restaurant. The interior is cozy, and familiar, and is filled mostly by families and old friends catching up. From what I've heard, Angela's has a strong camp following of devoted customers that don't seem to mind the sometimes brusque wait staff.
Brunch. It's classier than lunch, but still being served when you wake up. And it was just what two lovely ladies and I were craving the Saturday morning of Halloweekend. The perfect restaurant for quenching our hankerings was 3 Monkeys.
Take a turn off the busy and eclectic W. Cary Street in Carytown and you'll find Stuzzi Pizzeria nestled among a quieter neighborhood of bungalows. Even though I visited on a Sunday night, Stuzzi exuded a generally buzzing atmosphere of chaos that made dining there exciting and a little frustrating. The restaurant was clearly understaffed and the host left us waiting for a while as he and the bartender tried to sort out the delivery and carryout pizzas, so my friend and I decided to eat at the bar rather than wait for a table.
It sometimes feels like once you've been to one Mexican restaurant, you've been to them all. But that's not how I feel about Plaza Azteca on Broad Street. With a fun atmosphere, good drinks and huge portions, Plaza Azteca falls just a notch above other Mexican restaurants, including everyone's freshman year favorite, Mexico's.
Mezzanine 3433 gets its name from its address on Cary Street, a prime location for those looking to meander around the off-beat neighborhood before or after a good meal. Mezzanine had been on my list of places to eat before I graduate since I heard about their bloody mary bar at brunch. Conveniently located with an ever-changing menu of delicious dishes, Mezzanine proved to be a lovely dinner destination.
Every city has a few of those institutional restaurants that keep the locals coming back while still attracting tourists from all over. Millie's Diner is one of those places. You come for the reputation, get hooked on the mimosas and stay for the delicious and creative brunch.
Centrally located in Richmond's Fan district and extremely close to quaint Cary Street, Avalon Restaurant & Bar offers unique tapas-style dining. With a wide array of small plates influenced by cuisines from across the globe, the menu at Avalon is constantly changing and evolving. There is a wide variety of meat and seafood options as well as several vegetarian and gluten-free dishes as well.

Balliceaux is a spunky gem of a restaurant, with a menu that offers new American cuisine. Located in Richmond's Fan district, the restaurant is a unique departure from many of Richmond's more traditional Southern or European restaurants.
