My Palestinian friend Amar* often talks about how he wants to create change and work toward peace in his region, as well as in the world. Recently, he shared this inspirational story with me and he asked me to share it. Just because political peace talks are collapsing, does not mean that personal talks have to do the same. In fact, it is these personal relationships that will create a lasting difference in the region and the world.

We live in a culture that is grotesquely focused on "hooking up." Couples rarely date anymore, and the days of nice dinners and chivalry are long gone. Instead it's become widely accepted to consistently have sex with someone, forego the romantic gestures and still consider the relationship mildly legitimate.

As many people know, the anti-gay marriage laws DOMA (Defense of Marriage) and Proposition 8 have been up for review in the Supreme Court these past few days. Probably most of us wouldn't know about this if it weren't for the profile picture-changing phenomenon that has swept the country along with it (at least I'm assuming that it has swept the country- my Facebook friends are pretty localized on this coast).

Richmond's own 'ravishing' Rho Rho chapter of Delta Sigma Theta held a fundraising effort and shoe drive as a part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month for a second year. Known as Stepping Out on Faith, the initiative's goal was to collect shoes, clothing and money to donate to women's shelters.

A University of Richmond senior was the victim of an extreme domestic violence case in December 2005. Westhampton College student De'Nora Hill filed a protective order against her ex-boyfriend, Joseph Casuccio, after he slashed her tires and broke her sliding glass door, but it was not enough. On Dec. 5, Casuccio shot and killed Hill before committing suicide.

Alpha Chi Omega hosted Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, a new philanthropy event held Tues., Oct. 15. Four-person teams registered to walk a relay around the lake, learning facts about domestic violence at different stations. Teams were encouraged to wear heels to represent a day in the life of a woman suffering through domestic violence.
