Students filled the Pier for The Sirens’ annual Holiday Concert on Wednesday evening. The Sirens, University of Richmond’s all-female a cappella group, has hosted this a cappella concert since its debut Holiday Concert in 1995.

The tradition of a cappella continues at University of Richmond with The Sirens' annual Holiday Concert on Dec. 3. The concert will feature all four of the university's a cappella groups – The Sirens, Choeur du Roi, The Octaves and Off the Cuff – at 9 p.m. in the Pier.

Most University of Richmond students know that the Jepson Alumni Center exists, but what many students don’t know is that it houses a bed-and-breakfast. The Bottomley House has five bedrooms, each with a private bath, and offers accommodation to Richmond alumni, university guests and visitors attending events at the Alumni Center. Alumni, staff and faculty may also reserve rooms for friends and family, and parents of students enrolled at the university may reserve rooms as well.

Shujaa Graham spoke Tuesday evening about his experience on death row and the issues surrounding the death penalty within the U.S. criminal justice system. In 1973, Graham was framed for the murder of a prison guard and was sent to death row. His death sentence was overturned in 1979 and in 1981 he was found innocent and released from prison.

While many University of Richmond students traveled home for Fall Break, a smaller group stayed on campus to learn more about the city of Richmond. Every year, The Center for Civic Engagement hosts a free alternative Fall Break in Richmond where students can explore the city and participate in many activities. The trip lasted three days and focused on three themes: the environment, the arts and the community.

Robert Thurman is not only Uma Thurman’s father, but also one of the leading experts on Tibetan Buddhism and the first American to be ordained as a Tibetan monk by the Dalai Lama. On the evening of Sept. 30 in a packed Jepson Alumni Center, Thurman spoke to a crowd of students, staff and Richmond community members about the Buddhist perspective on conflict and anger.

In a recent press from Sept. 19, Carrie Hessler-Radelet, Peace Corps director, called on college students to consider making a difference through service by volunteering for the Peace Corps. Hessler-Radelet emphasized the Peace Corp’s new, shorter application process.

Ryan Frost, author and University of Richmond alumnus, debuted his most recent play, “September 12th,” on Sept. 10 and 11 at the Virginia Repertory Theatre. The script was based on Frost's experience of 9/11 as a freshman at Richmond.

Where were you on Sept. 11, 2001? For many Americans, this memory is as clear as the attacks that rattled our nation on that day 13 years ago. On Sept. 10 and 11, five students will explore those memories at the Virginia Repertory Theatre during a reading of "September 12th," a play by Ryan Frost, Richmond College '05.
