WASHINGTON -- Barack Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States Tuesday here in Washington, where more than 2 million people gathered to watch the first African-American become president. The inaugural parade followed that afternoon down Pennsylvania Avenue.

WASHINGTON -- On the eve of Barack Obama's presidential swearing-in, ebullient tourists and inaugural-goers were scattered throughout the National Mall. Some of them claimed spots for the night, hunkering down with sleeping bags and cardboard boxes to shield themselves from gusty winds. The nation's monuments -- iconic symbols of the U.S. democracy -- were lit majestically in the early morning hours before the country would inaugurate its first African-American president.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- After it became clear the University of Richmond would win its first national championship over the Montana Grizzlies 24-7, players doused coach Mike London in water, then charged the field to congratulate Montana and begin celebrating.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- University of Richmond fans traveled from near and far to witness their team win its first National Championship, while others watched from places as diverse as New York City, Washington, D.C., Ecuador and Singapore. Throughout the game, the Spider fans maintained their energy and support in the most overwhelming display of school spirit in years.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Hundreds of University of Richmond fans lined the entrance to Finley Stadium to welcome the Spiders during the final Spider Walk Friday night. Richmond's captains -- seniors John Crone, Will Healy, Sherman Logan and Lawrence Sidbury Jr. -- strode hand-in-hand onto the field. Army paratroopers glided onto the field, an 11-year-old Chattanooga native sang the National Anthem, and soon thereafter Richmond made a dominating performance during the national championship game.

The final week of the fall 2008 semester included numerous holiday celebrations and performances. Carriage rides carried students around campus on Wednesday, Dec. 3. For the first time, President Ayers hosted a winter wonderland celebration at his home. His backyard was transformed into a dining area with desserts and appetizers, sheltered underneath a large decorated (and heated) tent. The synchronized swimming team performed in front of hundreds at its annual holiday show in the Natatorium on Thursday and Friday nights. And the a capella groups came together in the Tyler Haynes Commons for their annual holiday show.

BOONE, N.C. -- Dozens of students traveled five hours to The Rock here in Boone to cheer on the Spider football team, which won 33-13, upsetting the three-time defending national FCS champions.

Hundreds of people gathered Sunday night for two candlelight services, held at Cannon Memorial Chapel. The service, now in its 35th year, featured performances from a bell choir, University of Richmond's Schola Cantorum and the university's women's chorale. Led by Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall, the service included readings from Bible passages and a rendition of "Silent Night," accompanied by a congregation-wide candlelighting.

For the first time, the annual Relay for Life was held on campus Nov. 1. Cancer survivors, supporters and students walked around the lake from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in support of finding a cure for cancer.

The University of Richmond celebrated homecoming the weekend of Oct. 24-26. The No. 9 Spiders football team shut down the Georgetown University Hoyas 48-0, a game during which seniors Keon Piper and Rachel Chikowski were crowed homecoming king and queen.

Fraternities and sororities at the University hosted the annual Trick-or-Treat Street on Oct. 18 at Fraternity Row. This year, profits from the event went toward funding a liver transplant for 3-year-old Cole Hafer of Richmond.

Presidential nominee Barack Obama, a Democrat, spoke at a rally at the Richmond Coliseum with an estimated 13,000 people in attendance. Democratic Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine introduced Obama, and former Virginia Gov. and U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner, also a Democrat, spoke as well.
