CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-- The 2012 season opener wasn't the start Richmond's new head football coach Danny Rocco wanted, not by a long shot, but it wasn't his worst nightmare either.
JR Riddick was lifting weights in the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness when a man approached him and asked why he didn't play football for the Spiders, Riddick said.
NORFOLK, Va. — Richmond tied the game at 28 during the fourth quarter thanks to a one-handed touchdown catch by wide receiver Stephen Barnette, but then Old Dominion scored two straight touchdowns to win, 42-28. The Spiders have now lost six straight and are now 3-6 this year. Richmond's defense, missing three starters before having another one leave the game on crutches, gave up 587 yards of offense to the Monarchs.
The Maine Black Bears came back from a 16-0 deficit to score 23 fourth-quarter points and win, 23-22, Saturday afternoon. It is Richmond's fourth-straight loss, all coming in Colonial Athletic Association play. Richmond was in range of a long field goal with under a minute left in the game, but quarterback Aaron Corp was sacked for 11 yards to put the Spiders at the Maine 44-yard line. His next two passes were incomplete to seal the victory for the Black Bears.
The first part of the season is done and Richmond has gone 3-0. Although the record is pristine, three quarters, two key injuries and one major problem have put a damper on the team's future.
Setting career highs for attempts, yards and touchdowns typically means a great four quarters of football.
