“The Shining,” based on Stephen King’s novel, was fairly misunderstood upon its first release. But like most Stanley Kubrick films, it has aged wonderfully, while also garnering a great deal of critical acclaim throughout the years. “The Shining” is one of the finest examples of the horror genre ever created, and a major achievement in Kubrick’s directorial output. The story of a family terrorized by the evil forces in the Overlook Hotel, this film is genuinely terrifying. Being able to see “The Shining” in a theater for the first time has added an almost mythic power to its already gargantuan stature. This film works so well because of Kubrick’s writing and directing talents. He is a known perfectionist who demands the best out of every single frame in his movies. This shows in the impressive technical aspects of the film.

"Basetrack Live" is an interactive multimedia experience, created and performed by the dedicated group of artists from the En Garde Arts theater company and the corpsmen from the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. I was lucky enough to catch the Oct. 22 performance at the Modlin Center for the Arts at University of Richmond. I have seen a great number of films and TV shows that deal directly with the effects of war, from "Full Metal Jacket" to "Band of Brothers." The majority of these productions focus primarily on the soldiers' perspectives on training, deployment, combat and re-integration back into society. Obviously the soldier’s perspective is crucial in understanding the overarching ramifications of war, but solely focusing on this aspect can only give you part of the picture. "Basetrack Live" attempts to correct this oversight in many ways.

“The Walking Dead” Season 5 Episode 2

“Gone Girl” is the new film from auteur director David Fincher. The movie stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike as Nick and Amy Dunne, a seemingly happy all-American couple living in the suburbs outside of St. Louis. Affleck gives the best performance of his career in this movie, as he is perfectly suited to play this role. Pike also gives a transformative performance in her breakthrough role as Amazing Amy. The movie is based on author and screenwriter Gillian Flynn’s bestselling novel of the same name.

The season premiere of “The Walking Dead” aired with a bang on Sunday night. After a long wait over the summer, it was exhilarating to return to our heroes as they faced yet another life-altering crisis. The major arc of the second half of the fourth season involved our group of survivors making their way toward the promise of sanctuary in Terminus, a place that had advertised itself as a safe haven from the calamity of the dead walking the earth. We were treated to a series of standalone episodes devoted to various members of the people who survived the battle with the governor at the prison. These episodes were meant to give us insight into who these people were as opposed to just fodder for the various living and dead enemies around. Some episodes were more successful than others, but on the whole they did a good job of building up to the season's end.

One of the major downsides of going abroad to Australia fall semester is missing out on all the autumn festivities in Richmond. I imagine the leaves around Westhampton Lake are incredible right now, I miss all the festive drinks at 8:15 and I’m really sad that I will not be home to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family. However, one of the major highlights of being abroad in the southern hemisphere is getting to celebrate Spring Break twice!
