President Edward Ayers said late Monday that the search for a permanent chaplain to the University of Richmond has been narrowed to two candidates, neither of whom are Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall, an announcement that casts uncertainty on the future role of one of the university's most revered and visible leaders.

Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall considers herself to be in the mold of the new face of the Roman Catholic Church — a mold that is moving away from the traditional seams and toward a different understanding of the world through a greater exposure to diversity. O'Dwyer Randall could definitely be described as non-traditional, she said.

With the start of the new semester came a new home for the Bonner Scholars Program. After its students launched a letter-writing campaign last semester, the program moved from the Office of the Chaplaincy to the Center for Civic Engagement.
