Richmond football's 2012 season ended in bittersweet fashion. The Spiders vastly improved from 2011 and earned a share of the conference title, yet the team failed to make the FCS postseason tournament. This year, the Spiders have their eyes set on another conference title and more. Here is a brief summary on what you need to know about Richmond Spiders football heading into the 2013 season:
Transfer junior quarterback Michael Rocco will not be eligible to play for the Spiders in the 2013 season, after leaving the University of Virginia this past semester.
Scouts and coaches from NFL teams across the country attended Spider Football's Pro Day on March 19 in Robins Stadium.
Richmond football coach, Danny Rocco, said on Wednesday that his 2013 recruiting class exhibited three characteristics: length, speed and versatility.
University of Richmond's head football coach, Danny Rocco, received a contract extension through 2017, Athletic Director Keith Gill announced on Monday. 2012 was Rocco's first season at Richmond.
For the second consecutive spring semester, Richmond's football team is bringing in a transfer quarterback from the University of Virginia.
Coming into the 2012 season, expectations were not high for the University of Richmond football team. The Spiders ended the 2011 season on an eight-game losing streak and finished last in the Colonial Athletic Conference (CAA).
Final Score: University of Richmond- 21, College of William & Mary- 14
4th Quarter, 0:00- Very similar to last week, Graham's pass is intercepted in the end zone on the game's final play by Reggie Barnette. Richmond survives with the win, 21-14.
Storylines:
Delaware quarterback Trent Hurley's final throw into the end zone was caught by Richmond safety Cooper Taylor, spoiling the Blue Hens' fourth-quarter comeback attempt.
Storylines:
Shutting out its opponent for the first time since 2009, Richmond's defense answered the challenge of coach Danny Rocco on Homecoming.
Final Score: University of Richmond- 39, University of Rhode Island- 0
4th Quarter, 0:00- URI doesn't drag the game out, running down the clock. Final Score: UR- 39, URI- 0.
Sophomore linebacker Eric Wright has become a respected leader on the University of Richmond's football team, not only because of his talent, but also because of his moral character and religious devotion.
Despite a fourth-quarter comeback by James Madison, Richmond was able to hold on for the win, 35-29, on Saturday in front of a sold-out Robins Stadium. The upset of the second-ranked Dukes serves as Danny Rocco's signature win in his first season as Spiders head coach. The star of the game for UR was sophomore quarterback Michael Strauss, who threw for 4 touchdowns in his first collegiate start. He'll start the rest of the season because incumbent starter John Laub suffered a broken ankle.
Beating the second-ranked team in the country seemed unbelievable for unranked Richmond, and a fourth-quarter James Madison comeback nearly left the Spiders with a heartbreaking loss.
4th Quarter, 0:00- Spiders win! The hail mary attempt again falls to the turf, and Richmond escapes with a huge victory over rival JMU. Final Score: UR- 35, JMU- 29.
