The Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils hosted the Trick or Treat Street philanthropic event Saturday at Old Fraternity Row, welcoming families from the Richmond community to campus for a day of Halloween games and activities. Proceeds were donated on behalf of 5-year-old Cole Hafer of Richmond to the Children's Organ Transplant Association. This was the third year Trick or Treat Street proceeds had been put toward Cole's liver transplant.

It's that time of year again. The leaves are turning crimson and gold, the air retains a strong scent of burning leaves and all the soccer moms at Martin's have started wearing their finest black cat and googly-eyed spider sweaters. That can only mean one thing: Halloween weekend is upon us.

Halloween. As kids, it was the chance to stockpile more candy than a small country consumes in a year. In college, it's - surprise, surprise - another chance to party, but one of the best, probably second only to Pig Roast. Trading Snickers for Smirnoff, students suit up in their scariest, their silliest, their sluttiest. But is that all? Is that why we love Oct. 31 so much? I hope not.

Church Hill Tunnel - In 1925 The Church Hill Train Tunnel was reopened after being closed because of deaths in 1877. Several cars were near the entrance of the tunnel when it collapsed, killing everyone. During early October you can hear the train going through the tunnel. Witnesses have reported seeing a man trying to get into the tunnel to reach his train and save the trapped workers. You can still hear them screaming.

Although many students' Halloween costumes elicited laughter this past weekend, one person's controversial choice ignited outrage and a flurry of discussion among the University of Richmond community.

Before I go any further let me say I was not on campus this weekend to experience the University of Richmond Halloween or see any of the creative costumes put together by our "intellectual risk takers." Nonetheless, I would place a bet on there being a "risk taker," somewhere on this campus, that did dress up like a Mexican gangster, American Indian or terrorist (intended to be of Muslim descent). I've seen these impersonators dress up in sombreros, head dresses and black and white scarves before, so I know I am not making this up. Maybe it didn't happen this year at the Richmond, but I am sure as hell that it has happened before and will happen again. How do I know this? These costumes are convenient, cheap, funny, sold at Party City and, frankly, drinking up during Halloween with a bomb strapped to your chest makes for a good Facebook picture.
