I was greatly disappointed upon visiting the Collegian website, and finding what many reasonable observers would consider to be a blatant misuse of university property and unethical behavior by a university employee ("Students receive politically charged e-mail from employee," Nov. 4, 2010).

Dear ______

I can remember the day like it was yesterday. It was a cold and damp morning in Pittsburgh on Oct. 30, 2004, when I ran away from my Atlantic 10 competition and into the record books. On that day, the Spider was King.

Dear Professor Mifsud, Dean Newcomb, Provost Allred and President Ayers,

As a former editorialist for this very student paper, I know a thing or two about hitting the "Send" button too quickly, about not really thinking things over sufficiently before letting them get to print, about wanting a Mulligan after it's a little too late for one. So I am willing to give my fellow alumnus David Anderton the benefit of the doubt, to believe he was not fueled by malice when he referred to the current Richmond students as "a self-absorbed and over-indulged group of apathetic human beings" in a letter to the editor earlier this week. However, the topic of Spider spirit is one that is inevitably raised almost annually, yet nothing constructive seems to come from it. So, for what it's worth, I'd like to share a few thoughts on the issue.

I thought I was going to get over this, but the more I think about it, the madder I get.

Dear Collegian,

At colleges and universities across America, students are heading into the classroom, many for the first time. You're taking part in a journey that will not only determine your future, but the future of this country. We know, for example, that nearly eight in ten new jobs will require workforce training or higher education by the end of this decade. And we know that in a global economy, the nation that out-educates us today will out-compete us tomorrow. In the 21st century, America's success depends on the education our students receive.

Dear Members of the University Community,

Unfortunately, this is not a reaction to Victoria Cobb and the Jepson Award. Instead, this is a reaction to something not as publicized. Jepson is losing its one true student advocate -- Ana Mitric.

As I will be attending the University of Richmond in the fall as a freshman, I decided to look at the school newspaper, The Collegian. I was hoping to see more about politics and economics, but the paper is largely dedicated to the current happenings of the school. One article that stood out to me, however, was "Iran Threatens World Peace."

Victoria Cobb's alumni leadership award was only days old when her foundation promptly thanked the University of Richmond with an insulting stab in the back. In a misleading, factually deficient post about the award on its official blog, Ms. Cobb's Family Foundation showed just how grateful it was by mocking the university and its students just days after she railed against the evils of name-calling.

If you are not yet aware, an alumnus of the University of Richmond is currently a political prisoner in Azerbaijan for speaking out against a corrupt government and advocating for his and his peoples' right to a free democratic government.

Dear Fellow Students,

To quote: "What kills me about news reports on this issue is that they focus on what feminists think ... Do people claim that the Holocaust was a Jewish issue or that slavery was an African issue? ... This is not simply a feminist issue and to write it off as such is to do the human population at large a major injustice."

In my four years at Richmond, we have stolen nothing from the school, but it has stolen one thing from us: an outdoor grill. On Sunday evening, a group of fifteen friends gathered outside a UFA apartment to watch the classic Bruce Willis flick Armageddon and roast marshmallows on a wood-burning grill — a nice one, I might add.
