When a person is released from prison, his or her quest for true freedom has only just begun. Although physical bars no longer surround them, ex-offenders must overcome the challenge of reconnecting with themselves, friends, family and society.

As an openly gay male on this campus, my experiences are certainly different from those of closeted homosexuals.

I have expressed disdain in the past for the lack of sports support from the student body and have had trouble understanding the lack of interest. Being at Duke Saturday night, I was excited to see hundreds of red-shirted students standing and cheering for the team and actually joining some of our vocal alumni leading cheers and encouraging others. It was Chattanooga all over again.

I graduated in May, still live in Richmond and couldn't help but notice the article in last week's paper about the employment "success" of my class. Personally, I have yet to find a job despite an exhaustive search and graduating with honors.

In recent weeks, the debate over health care has grown fierce, but, unfortunately, extremely petty. Whether it is the claim that old people will be euthanized if it is too expensive to keep them alive or that a public option will prevent people from receiving life-saving medical procedures, the lies and smears spread by the pharmaceutical and health insurance companies have muddled the facts about health care reform. Even more unfortunate is the obvious truth that the politics of fear is again finding traction among many conservatives. So let's look at the facts.

The University of Richmond has begun to take steps toward fostering a more inclusive community for sexual and gender minorities on campus. Frustrated by our persistent marginalization and invisibility on campus, organizations representing sexual and gender minorities have begun to reinvigorate themselves and, in the process, have cultivated campus-wide enthusiasm for their efforts.

I read Maura Bogue's opinion piece last week in The Collegian and found it entertaining. With humor, stereotyping is common, but I thought I should address some of it for those who are not making the journey over the lake. Also, drawing conclusions from one classroom experience does not seem fair, even if it is from Joe Ben Hoyle, the first faculty member to give a "Last Lecture."

To the UR students who showed their support for the appointment of Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall to the permanent position of Chaplain to the University of Richmond in a petition circulated at the end of last semester, congratulations. Some have called the student body of UR apathetic. It appears they have been proven wrong. Five hundred and fifty. That's how many of you signed the petition. More than 20 percent of the entire student body. When it comes down to something we care about, we get fired up.

Dear Editor,

Ladies and gentlemen, don't miss the "Pies for Charity" event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, March 30 in the Forum. This stellar, campus-wide event, hosted by Richmond College Residence Life, will be the center of attention on campus this coming Monday.

Quite a lot was written about Prague in the '90s, the city being trumped up as the new "left bank" for expats with a bohemian bent. Today, foreigners living in the city are generally less interstitial - and the businessman has generally replaced the beatnik on the street.

As an alumnus of Richmond College and a current trustee of this great university, I offer my own voice to a recent dialogue on campus sparked by the "Letter from the Closet" from Anonymous and by the online response from Amicus last week. It has been quite a long time since I've had the pleasure to forward a letter to the editor of The Collegian, and I celebrate this occasion to say directly to the entire university community that I am openly, proudly, happily gay.

What is Spiders for Life? The club has been "on the books" for quite a while, but in recent years it has faded away almost entirely. Until now, that is.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the University of Richmond students, faculty, staff and alumni for the generosity you showed my 3-year-old son, Cole Hafer, who is facing a life-saving liver transplant. Last year's Trick-or-Treat Street donated $10,000 to a fund that has been established through the Children's Organ Transplant Association. However, the kindness, dedication and hard work of those involved with the event was worth more than any amount of money. We are truly touched by the love and concern showed by so many people. Cole sleeps with the autographed balls he was given by the football team and basketball team and often says, "I want to go to the Spider school when I get big!"

I'm sure I'm not the only person who had a less than enjoyable time attempting to puddle-jump across the Forum Thursday after a day of rain that rivaled the remnants of the tropical storm we experienced in September. It served as yet another example of a problem on campus that is almost never brought up: the terrible storm water management system on campus.
