After Destiny LeVere, sophomore and vice president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.'s chapter at University of Richmond, noticed the frequency of racist interactions among students at Richmond, she came up with the idea for an open discussion, which her sorority hosted.

Dear Performer,

"Under the Rug," the culmination of a semester of research, directing and producing, will debut Thursday. Senior Kiara Lee wrote and directed the series of staged readings, which focus on the issue of colorism within the black community.

In one of my classes this semester, the teacher showed us a PowerPoint that included a quotation containing the word "Negro." After she read it, she turned to the one black person in our class and said, "Sorry, (his name)."

Ever since I was accused of spreading racist ideology by a University of Richmond professor because I had asked whether a certain U.S. president was racist, I feel much freer to express my opinion. You can tell a lot about people by their response to an unorthodox question. When the answer is nothing short of a personal accusation, and the responder happens to be a University of Richmond professor or an administrator, you begin thinking, "OK, maybe I am being indoctrinated with their own beliefs instead of being taught to judge for myself."

Every student enrolled here at the University of Richmond is well-educated. But, it has come to my attention that academic proficiency is simply not sufficient at the college level, and that there is currently a significant problem with ignorance on the Richmond campus.

Contrary to Emily Miller's dire warnings and cynical predictions (see 'Afroman to perform: joke's on us'), I found the Afroman concert during Pig Roast to be enjoyable and enriching. Her attacks on Afroman's talent and career proved to be patently ridiculous.

Engendered by recent discourse and articles regarding race at the University of Richmond, student leaders, administrators and students convened in the forum on March 25, 2010, for a civil dialogue on community inclusiveness and racism.

Have you heard? Afroman is coming to campus for Pig Roast!

The office of Common Ground has been following discussions taking place in The Collegian and elsewhere about racism and the varied campus-life experiences of students. And we have been disturbed by recent headlines about the Virginia Attorney General questioning the place of sexual orientation in anti-discrimination statements of public colleges and universities.

Dear University of Richmond student body,
(11/01/07 4:00am)
To the person who dressed in blackface for Halloween this past weekend:
(11/01/07 4:00am)
Blackface. It's the "issue du jour" and it's on everyone's minds.
(11/01/07 4:00am)
I am hopeful.

Before I go any further let me say I was not on campus this weekend to experience the University of Richmond Halloween or see any of the creative costumes put together by our "intellectual risk takers." Nonetheless, I would place a bet on there being a "risk taker," somewhere on this campus, that did dress up like a Mexican gangster, American Indian or terrorist (intended to be of Muslim descent). I've seen these impersonators dress up in sombreros, head dresses and black and white scarves before, so I know I am not making this up. Maybe it didn't happen this year at the Richmond, but I am sure as hell that it has happened before and will happen again. How do I know this? These costumes are convenient, cheap, funny, sold at Party City and, frankly, drinking up during Halloween with a bomb strapped to your chest makes for a good Facebook picture.
