Your experience at this university is what you make of it. There are some things that you get used to; there are other things that you learn to avoid. And if you ever get outside of the bubble, there are some things about this university that you learn to appreciate. Adapted from the ubiquitous "25 Random Things About Me" Facebook lists, below is a list of observations, complaints and general (college) life lessons unique to the home of the Richmond Spiders:

What was last Friday? It was "the night the lodge went wrong." For some, the complications of a lodge being shut down ruined the night, but I had ended up experiencing the joy of random fun. Plus, being removed from the actual lodge while in the midst of a lodge mindset and atmosphere allowed for some (deep and meaningful) reflection about our campus' obsession with lodge parties.

The first few weeks of the Obama presidency have been marked by both triumph and embarrassment. From the left's perspective, Obama triumphed in enacting a gargantuan spending bill that is supposed to pull our economy out of its current doldrums. The passage of this bill marked the first of what liberals hope are many legislative victories for the new administration. The embarrassment came in the form of several high-profile nominees and their inability to pay taxes properly.

The final week of the fall 2008 semester included numerous holiday celebrations and performances. Carriage rides carried students around campus on Wednesday, Dec. 3. For the first time, President Ayers hosted a winter wonderland celebration at his home. His backyard was transformed into a dining area with desserts and appetizers, sheltered underneath a large decorated (and heated) tent. The synchronized swimming team performed in front of hundreds at its annual holiday show in the Natatorium on Thursday and Friday nights. And the a capella groups came together in the Tyler Haynes Commons for their annual holiday show.

Look around everyone; we don't have any reasons to be thankful. It's really cold outside, there's tons of schoolwork to do and geese are taking over the grass in front of the library. We don't even have holidays that stand for something noble. There are two holidays coming up: the second most drunken day of the year (Thanksgiving) and the most commercialized day of our miserable capitalist lives (Christmas). Congratulations to America for eating Thanksgiving and Christmas and pooping out gluttony and materialism. That's an awkward image, to be true, but completely apt.

I like to think of myself as an objective gatherer of news and information - an unbiased observer of all things around me. But something I saw at the Spiders vs. Georgetown game a few weeks ago has been weighing on my heart since: pastels.
