Richmond vs VCU: Halftime update

The Spiders have built a nine-point lead over the VCU Rams, with the score 29-20 at halftime.

Richmond's lead was built on its assist-oriented offense and efficient shooting. The Spiders have 10 assists compared with VCU's two. At one point in the first half, the Spiders were shooting 62 percent and limiting VCU to just 29 percent.

But the Rams began forcing turnovers and grabbing offensive rebounds, narrowing the 13-point lead to just nine. VCU has grabbed seven offensive rebounds compared with Richmond's one, but all of those rebounds only converted into two second-chance points.

The Spiders will rely on continued efficiency shooting the ball and an electric atmosphere in the Robins Center during the second half. Expect a much closer second half, as VCU coach Shaka Smart will undoubtedly make adjustments to counter the Spiders' shooting success. VCU's second-half gameplan will likely involve more passing and tighter defense on TJ Cline in the post, who leads Richmond with nine points (alongside ShawnDre' Jones, who also has nine).
