Identity of Richmond student accused of committing sexual assault still unknown

A University of Richmond police captain said Thursday that campus police did not know the identity of a male Richmond student accused of committing sexual assault against a female Richmond student, although the victim reported she had been sexually assaulted by a known male.

"We're still investigating to find out who the known party is," URPD Captain John Jacobs said. The accused's identity was not included in the report URPD received from the victim, Jacobs said.

URPD learned that between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. a sexual assault occurred on campus in the University Forest Apartments, according to two timely warning emails, one of which was mistakingly emailed. The incident was reported Sunday at 11:55 p.m., according to URPD’s crime log.

“The individual end up going to the hospital and the hospital followed by calling us, because it’s our jurisdiction,” Jacobs said.

"The victim reported that she was sexually assaulted by a known male, but no additional information is available at this time," reads the emails students received Monday morning.

The police notified the Title IX office, said Dan Fabian, associate dean of Richmond College and deputy Title IX coordinator, but he said he could not disclose any information regarding a separate Title IX investigation.

URPD is still working to determine the identify of the known suspect.

"We haven't given up on our end," Jacobs said.

Richmond is one of more than 100 colleges and universities under federal investigation for a Title IX violation.
