Despite a valiant effort Sunday by the Richmond Spiders to stay close with the Rhode Island Rams, the Spiders fell short in the final four minutes and could not complete their comeback.
“Whatever! We’ll see you in the tournament!”
In a packed Robins Center on Friday night, the Richmond Spiders took about 20 minutes to find themselves.
After a stellar freshman campaign, Spiders’ guard ShawnDre’ Jones was chosen as a breakout sophomore by Sports Illustrated writer Luke Winn for the 2014-2015 men’s basketball season.
In the early morning hours of Oct. 21, 2013, Officer Sgt. Scott Seitz stopped a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix on Route 1 in South Plainsboro, N.J., for speeding at 71 mph in a 55 mph zone. After the initial stop at 3:40 a.m., Seitz arrested the driver, Richmond basketball senior Derrick Williams after, according to a press release from the Plainsboro Township Police Department, an "investigation revealed him to be in possession of marijuana."
The third time was not the charm for the Spiders. The Virginia Commonwealth University Rams completed the three-game season sweep over University of Richmond to move on to the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals.

University of Richmond will carry a four-game losing streak into the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the Atlantic 10 tournament following its 60-48 loss at University of Dayton Saturday night.
University of Richmond led Virginia Commonwealth University for the first 30 minutes, but the Rams rallied late without its two point guards and pulled out Thursday night's slugfest, 56-50, to sweep the season's two-game series with the Spiders.

3-4 - Virginia Commonwealth University is 3-4 on the road in conference play, and has lost three of its last four road games. Additionally, Richmond has beaten VCU in the last two games played at the Robins Center. Tonight's game is not surprisingly sold out, but VCU will have their fair share of fans. The new Robins Center has been notoriously loud all season - St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli even questioned whether Richmond had amplified the crowd noise. It will be interesting to see how many VCU fans get into the Robins Center, and if they can nullify Richmond's home-court advantage.
The University of Richmond men's basketball team will face Virginia Commonwealth University Thursday night at the Robins Center, but Richmond's team looks a lot different than than it did when it fell to the Rams, 81-70, at VCU in February.
