Richmond manager Mark McQueen may have no idea how Brett Williams is able to throw eight innings when he doesn't have his best stuff, but it sure came in use Friday afternoon as the Spiders took down the La Salle Explorers, 5-2, in the first game of a critical weekend series.

This weekend as I watched the Richmond baseball team take on St. Bonaventure University, I was reminded of my childhood.

Up one run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and runners on first and third, St. Bonaventure University decided to intentionally walk University of Richmond rightfielder Mike Mergenthaler. Pinch-hitter Bryan Conway made the Bonnies pay.

It's the fourth quarter for my fellow Collegian seniors and me. I'm sure Papa Spear and the rest of the journalism department had a collective cringe with my lede, which began with probably the most cliche saying in sports, but it's true. This is our last issue together, and seniors throughout the campus are wrapping up their theses, projects and more as we prepare for what lies ahead.

University of Richmond freshman pitcher Andrew Blum needed to throw a strike after falling behind the lead-off hitter during the top of the ninth in a tied game. Blum did just that but unfortunately for Richmond, it was too good of a pitch as Bucknell University's Colby Vanderbeck drove the pitch for a home run that gave Bucknell a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Pitt Field.

My favorite moment of last year's Major League Baseball season was when Detroit Tigers fans gave umpire Jim Joyce a standing ovation a day after his blown call robbed Tigers' pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.

All the makings of a dramatic victory were there for the University of Richmond. Freshman Mike Small was at the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 10th with a runner on first and Richmond trailing by one. But it was not meant for Small to be the hero.

This is the incendiary tale of a couple of average Richmond kids, trying to come to grips with success ... who come up short, with nothing to show for themselves but a tale that begs to be told.

The day after the unlikely World Series match up between the San Francisco Giants and the Texas Rangers was confirmed, I scrolled through both teams' active line-ups. I didn't know much about the players, so I started researching. Here's what I dug up.

Many students at the University of Richmond are friends with one or more of the hundreds of Division I athletes on campus. They see them in class, the dining hall and support them during competition. But what many students don't see are the perks student-athletes receive to help them perform well on the field and in the classroom.

I was standing in my friend's UFA kitchen last weekend, talking with him about whatever series of unusual events was taking place in each of our respective lives.

I'd like to remember Roger Clemens' split-fingered fastballs, not the Feds fingerprinting him. I'd like to recall how he always seemed to make great pitches when he was behind in the count, not the one count of obstruction of Congress, two counts of perjury and three counts of making false statements that he now faces.
