University of Richmond was not immune to the national trend of college students setting up "confessions" Facebook pages for their schools, which has become popular in the past few years. But the Richmond Confessions page has had such an impact on the university community that leaders of three student organizations thought it would be beneficial to host a roundtable discussion focusing on it.

The Center for Civic Engagement and the Office of the Chaplaincy hosted University of Richmond's eighth annual poverty simulation on Oct. 7, attended by more than 50 student participants. During the simulation, students were required to role-play the lives of low-income families by securing food, shelter and other basic necessities for a month. The entire simulation lasted for approximately one hour.

Social media confounds me. LinkedIn, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, Foursquare, Google Plus+, Meetup, Flickr, Wordpress, MySpace, StumbleUpon and Facebook. I have accounts on less than half of that list, but I really only know how to use one: Facebook. And in today's job market, I'm told that's a huge, awful, unemployable problem.

As technology has evolved, so have our communication strategies. University of Richmond has 75 study abroad programs around the world, making international communication a priority for many students. IPhone applications such as WhatsApp and Viber have made home only a few clicks away, but some students have found communication detracts from the abroad immersion experience.

For the past 25 years, Paul Porterfield, director of the Media Resource Center, has worked closely with Uliana Gabara, former dean of international education, in planning the University of Richmond's annual International Film Series. Since Gabara retired this spring, this fall's series will probably be the last in which she is heavily involved.
