The coordinate college system is a characteristic of both a student’s academic career and social life at the University of Richmond. In recent years, some students have expressed concerns that the system is obsolete because students are placed into colleges based on their gender identity.

First off, I want to thank those who have courageously shared their stories this past month and continue to work tirelessly toward creating a better Richmond. I am proud to attend a university where this sense of responsibility and level of activism is so clearly visible and vocal on many levels.
Beginning July 1, Dr. Mia Reinoso Genoni will serve as the Dean of Westhampton College and Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, according to an email announcement sent Friday evening.
Westhampton College hosted the Connecting Women of Color Conference on Feb. 13, a convention that promoted inclusivity, diversity and support for women of color.
One hundred years ago, Westhampton Lake was much more than a Facebook cover photo. It served as both a physical and metaphorical divide between Richmond men and Westhampton women. Although classes have since integrated and students can live on either side of the lake, the roots of gender separation still remain in what is known as the coordinate college system. Two deaneries, two student governments and two mission statements coexist under one university, though debate over the validity of the system divides the campus community.
As alumnae, we have both served on Westhampton College Government Association, and last year we were the WCGA president and chair of senate. We are disheartened and saddened by some of the responses to Ring Dance 2015.

We all learned this rule in kindergarten: Don’t put your hands on other people without their permission. It seems that our administrators forgot this lesson Saturday night at Ring Dance when the deans and policemen crossed the line from strongly encouraging against to physically restraining escorts from walking down The Jefferson Hotel’s historic flight of stairs with junior women.

Dangerously high levels of E. coli and coliform detected in Westhampton Lake have forced Delta Gamma and Theta Chi to postpone their joint philanthropic event, Richmond Regatta.
The youngest and oldest of Westhampton College students gathered Saturday in Cannon Memorial Chapel to celebrate the duties and privileges of being Westhampton women. They were joined by hundreds of alumnae to honor the centennial of the founding of Westhampton College.
