After 17 years at the University of Richmond, Lisa Miles, associate director of the Student Center for Equity and Inclusion and the creator behind Spiders First-generation and Limited-income program, retired from her role this June. Now, she’s visiting for UR’s First-Generation College Celebrations, commemorating 10 years of the first-gen programming she spearheaded on campus.

At a squat rack on the first floor of the Weinstein Center for Recreation, junior Abby Bangs begins her third set of bent rows as “Crooked Smile” by J. Cole plays through her AirPods. It is pull day, so her lifts are focusing on her biceps, back and forearms. The gym is not overly crowded, but of the 20 people in the weights section, she is the only girl.

As nightfall draped Richmond's historic Jackson Ward neighborhood, the enchanting melodies of Soraya Silene, known as IONNA, filled the air at Gallery 5 on a Wednesday evening in mid-October. Her singing echoed through the quiet streets, painting a musical tapestry that wove itself into the art-adorned walls, while about 40 attendees with beers in hand surrounded by art paintings and small cocktail tables swung their bodies to the music.

On the evening of Oct. 25, Leland Melvin, ‘86, had an audience of hundreds captivated by his stories of perseverance as an astronaut at NASA. He was joined on stage – as he was in space – by his friend and fellow former astronaut Robert Satcher. They traveled aboard the shuttle Atlantis in 2009, marking the first time two African-American men were in space together.

Dressed in a stuffy, over-sized spider costume, 5-foot-tall Destiny LeVere Bolling, ‘16, danced to upbeat music and high-fived cheering fans before a home University of Richmond basketball game. Webstur, UR’s mascot, had a special place in Bolling’s heart, which compelled her to volunteer for the role at least once during her student years. Little did the fans know, beneath that fluffy arachnid exterior was a future politician passionate about altruism and advocacy.

As she carried her belongings into Lora Robins Court on move-in day last fall, Jasmine Khatcheressian was plagued by anxiety that would last for months. Not only was she nervous to begin a new phase of her life as a first-year college student, but Khatcheressian, a transgender woman, had been assigned to live with a cisgender male roommate in a male housing block.
