Letter: Thanks to the student body

To the UR students who showed their support for the appointment of Acting Chaplain Kate O'Dwyer Randall to the permanent position of Chaplain to the University of Richmond in a petition circulated at the end of last semester, congratulations. Some have called the student body of UR apathetic. It appears they have been proven wrong. Five hundred and fifty. That's how many of you signed the petition. More than 20 percent of the entire student body. When it comes down to something we care about, we get fired up.

To all who signed the petition, taking time out of their studies just before exams, we express our sincere gratitude and deepest thanks. Our goal was to gauge concern about the issue. We were pleasantly surprised by how many shared our same concerns.

While the administration has agreed to consider the petition and enter Chaplain Kate's name into the list of candidates, the national search for a permanent chaplain will continue so as to bring legitimacy to the position. The search committee hopes to reach a decision by mid-July. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue to support the Chaplaincy and Chaplain Kate in her mission of social justice here at the University of Richmond.
