Football team regains No. 1 ranking after win against Duke

The University of Richmond football team is No. 1 in the country again.

The Spiders entered this season ranked No. 1 in the Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision poll, but No. 2 in the FCS Coaches Poll behind Appalachian State University. After Richmond beat Duke 24-16 on Saturday night and Appalachian State lost to East Carolina University 29-24, the voters put the Spiders back on top.

Richmond received 24 of the 28 possible first-place votes in the Coaches poll to take over the top spot and maintained its position at No. 1 in the Sporting News poll, marking the first time in Richmond football history that the team has been ranked No. 1 in both polls during the regular season.

Last season, Richmond held the No. 1 ranking in the Sports Network poll for one week, but lost to Villanova University the following week and dropped in the polls. The Spiders are 4-2 all-time when playing as the No. 1 team.

Richmond will carry its No. 1 ranking and 10-game winning streak into Newark, Del. at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when it takes on the University of Delaware Blue Hens.
