Field hockey team beats Temple, wins A-10 championship

The University of Richmond field hockey team defeated Temple University today to win its sixth Atlantic 10 tournament title in the last eight years.

The Spiders defeated third-seeded Temple 3-0 at the tournament, held in Amherst, Mass., and will now play Mid-American champion Ohio University at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, in the NCAA play-in game.

Senior Sarah Blythe-Wood scored her 21st goal of the season off a corner during the 24th minute of the first half. Sophomore Katelin Peterson and senior Adrian Pickar scored the other goals for the Spiders as they won their first conference championship since 2006. It was the seventh shutout of the season for senior goalkeeper Jacki Raithel and the Spiders defense.

Blythe-Wood scored the game-winning goal on Friday in Richmond's 2-1 overtime semifinal win over Massachusetts, the fourth seed and the two-time defending conference champions, and was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player. Freshman Catherine Ostoich, Peterson and junior Dani Pycroft also earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
