Richmond earns 7th seed, faces Saint Mary's in Providence

The University of Richmond men's basketball team earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 and will face Saint Mary's College during the first round on Thursday in Providence, R.I.

The Spiders are the No. 7 seed in the South Region and the Gaels are the No. 10 seed. The winner will face the winner of a game between No. 2 seed Villanova University and No. 15 seed Robert Morris University on Saturday.

Richmond has reached the tournament seven times before and enjoyed success as an underdog, holding the distinction as the only team to win Tournament games as a 15, 14, 13 and 12 seed. But this year, the Spiders' seed is the highest in program history.

Richmond had an opportunity to improve its seeding even further by winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but lost to Temple University 56-52 on Sunday afternoon.

Temple and Xavier University were the only other A-10 teams to qualify for the tournament, with the Owls earning a No. 5 seed and the Musketeers earning a No. 6 seed.
