Anderson to enter NBA Draft

University of Richmond junior Kevin Anderson declared for the 2010 NBA Draft on Monday, but will not hire an agent. By not hiring an agent, Anderson can withdraw his name by May 8 and still be eligible to play next year for the Spiders.

Anderson, a 6-foot point guard from Atlanta, Ga., averaged 17.8 points and 37 minutes per game last year. He was the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American.

"I love the University of Richmond and am extremely excited about what we can accomplish next year as a team," Anderson said in a statement. "Obviously playing in the NBA has always been a goal of mine. I have declared for the draft to get access to all the resources available for a college player, putting myself in the best position to represent the University of Richmond in the NBA."

Anderson will be able to work out with NBA teams and receive projections as to where he might go in the draft.

During the three years that Anderson has been at Richmond, he has scored a total of 1,549 points, which is eighth most in school history. He needs about 350 more points to move into third place on the all-time scoring list.

Last year, Anderson teamed with senior David Gonzalvez to make one of the best backcourts in the A-10. The team went 26-7 and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. It was also the first time in school history that Richmond was the higher seed in a tournament game.

If Anderson decides to return for his senior season, he will lead a team full of seniors and juniors. Richmond will return three of its starters from last year's team if Anderson returns.

In a statement released by the athletic department, Richmond coach Chris Mooney said that he supported Anderson's decision to enter the draft.

"Kevin has had a tremendous three seasons at Richmond and clearly established himself as one of the best point guards in the country," Mooney said. "It is obviously every basketball player's dream to be selected in the NBA Draft and we are excited about Kevin's future."

The last time a Richmond player was selected in the NBA Draft was in 1992 when Curtis Blair was picked at the end of the second round by the Houston Rockets. But according to Basketball-Reference.com, Blair never played in the NBA.
