Lora M. Robins, widow of E. Claiborne, dies

Lora M. Robins, whose family has supported the University of Richmond and the greater Richmond community for more than 40 years, died Sunday at age 98.

In September 1969, Robins and her husband, alumnus and trustee E. Claiborne Robins, donated $50 million to the University of Richmond with the goal of making it one of the best small universities in the nation.

In recent years, donations from the Robins family have contributed to the Westhampton Center and E. Claiborne Robins Stadium, which is scheduled to open next month.

In an e-mail sent to university students, staff and faculty this morning, President Edward L. Ayers said that the Robins family's support had changed thousands of lives.

"The Robins family has given the University of Richmond the opportunity to be more than it could have otherwise imagined," Ayers said, "and Mrs. Robins was there at every step of the way, guiding and shaping our future."

The University flag will fly at half-staff this week in recognition of her passing.
