Richmond gets first ever road victory over Dayton, 70-61

Senior guard Kevin Anderson scored 26 points and junior forward Darrius Garrett had a highlight reel dunk as Richmond defeated the University of Dayton, 70-61, Tuesday night in Dayton, Ohio.

Richmond held its own against a strong rebounding Dayton team and grabbed 38 rebounds compared to Dayton's 40. The Flyers did get 15 offensive rebounds but Dayton's poor shooting (34 percent) due largely to Richmond forcing Dayton to take jumpers mitigated Dayton's rebounding advantage.

The play of the game came late during the second half when senior Kevin Smith fed Garrett for a fast-break dunk over a Dayton defender. It was one of five assists for Smith, who had a career-high 11 two games ago against George Washington.

Anderson scored 18 of his 26 points during the first half as Richmond led 30-28 at the half. Senior Justin Harper was kept in check by Dayton with 14 points on 4 of 13 shooting. He did have a big impact on the game though with his 11 rebounds.

Senior Dan Geriot scored 13 points, which gives him double figures in scoring in consecutive games for the first time since the second and third games of this year.

Richmond made 8 of its 15 3-pointers as it picked up its first win on Dayton's home court. Richmond had lost its previous eight games there.

With the win, Richmond moved to 16-5 on the year and second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a 5-1 record. It is the Spiders best start in A-10 play in the 10 years that they have been a member of the 14-team conference.

The Spiders led for most of the game and trailed for 26 seconds as the Flyers took their only lead of the game during the second half.

Richmond plays on national television again at noon on Saturday when it hosts Xavier University. The game will be aired on ESPN2.
