Letter to the Editor: Faculty Filtering

We are halfway through the semester, and it has dawned on me that the frustration I have had during the past several weeks has not been school-related, but rather related to job opportunities on campus. It seems that, although there is an up-to-date list of job openings on the financial aid website, it is challenging to receive a reply from any of the prospective positions.

I have applied to five jobs around campus, and each time I finish an application, I anticipate hearing from someone within a week. These expectations are met with frustration, as it has been several weeks since my last application, and I have yet to hear anything. I have a well-developed resume and a lot of work experience. I am overqualified for some of the positions.

Regardless, I expect to atleast hear back from a potential employer \0xAD-- even if the position is filled. A courteous, "We received your application but, unfortunately, the position is no longer available" would suffice, as I could then direct my attention to finding another job. You would think that a college campus would be a bit more conscientious that certain students have to work while in school.

The university faculty should consider this when filtering emails and opportunities for students. Although hiring someone new for a department might be a rare occurrence, it would be great to correspond with the applicants so that if they are denied a position, they know sooner and are able to move on. Thank you for your time.
