Field Hockey upends Saint Joseph's 1-0 with time expired

Freshman Kimberly Sportack scored her first career goal on a penalty corner with time expired, allowing Richmond to beat Saint Joseph's 1-0 Friday.

The score was 0-0 when the Spiders were given a penalty corner with less than a minute left in the game. Time expired before the team had a chance to insert the corner, but the corner was completed because it was awarded before time expired.

"It was a really great moment," Sportack said of scoring the goal. "We always talk about how we play with passion and our hearts."

This victory was the seventh-straight win for the 17th-ranked Spiders.

Richmond dominated the game against Saint Joseph's. The team's defense kept the ball at the Spider's end of the field for the majority of the game.

"The team had a hard time keeping focus," Sportack said. "But in the end we knew what we had to do and we got it done."

Junior Jessica Hollis assisted the winning goal.

The team's head coach, Gina Lucido, said Richmond showed its character throughout the game.

"The girls maintained their poise," Lucido said. "It was a tough game but the team didn't fall down."

Lucido said it was a close game with Saint Joseph's, and that the opposing team fought a good battle.

"I thought St. Joe's was outstanding," Lucido said. "The players were resilient."

The Spiders' season continues with a home game at 1 p.m. Sunday against Temple.
